Mechanika recently carried out a full design optimisation and analysis of a bespoke turnover machine for part of a satellite assembly.
The assembly was initially assessed with traditional stress hand calculations to Eurocode 3 and BS EN 13001 Crane code series, which was then verified with detailed FEA using RFEM5 and ANSYS Mechanical Workbench 2020 R1.
After initial assessment, Mechanika was able to provide a 1 tonne weight saving to the machine, using sound structural engineering principles and a thorough understanding of the load path through the system.
The turnover machine was assessed for:
-Static Loads
-Proof Loads
-Lifting Loads
-Dynamic rotation and emergency stop inertial loading
We advised the client about the initial weight optimisation at the beginning of the project, after the scoping analysis was undertaken, instead of informing them at the end of the project and incurring them more cost. We were able to identify this opportunity for our client and execute the optimised design under the same programme, without delaying their build or charging them for further analysis.
At Mechanika, we take pride in our honest approach to supporting our clients in delivering world class and fully optimised designs. We see our analysis involvement as an integral part for their business and we are always willing to go that extra mile to ensure that every project is a success – both functionally and economically.
